The Jicarilla Apache lived in southern Colorado, northeastern New Mexico, the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandle, the Mescalero Apache lived generally south of them between the Rio Grande and the Rio Pecos in New Mexico onto the Staked Plains and the Trans-Pecos in Texas (a small band the Gulkhahéndé traveled the Plains toward Oklahoma) south to the northern parts of the Mexican States Chihuahua and Coahuila. East of them lived the Lipan Apache from the Rio Colorado in central Texas down to the Gulf Coast of Texas and the Mexican State of Tamaulipas. The Lipan bands also travelled and inhabited the northern parts of the Mexican States of Coahuila, Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas. To the west and southwest of the Mescalero lived the Chiricahua Apachein southern New Mexico and Arizona west of the Rio Grande and ranged also into the northern parts of the Mexican States of Chihuahua and Sonora. The Western Apache lived generally in central and southern Arizona north of the Chiricahua and west of the Mescalero between the Little Colorado River in the north and the Gila River south, and between the Colorado River in the west and the Rio Grande in the east.
