Cantigny, village of France A capture by the American 1st Division on May 28, 1918, and the first American attack of ww1. To test the Americans' offensive ability in their first active sector, the French command ordered the new division, a reinforced U.S. regiment of about 4, 000 men, to capture Cantigny, a village located near Montdidier in the Somme region. Assisted by French tanks, the division captured the town in forty-five minutes and took over 200 prisoners. The Americans withstood a series of counterattacks over the next two days.
