It was named for it's high carbohydrate and fiber content. Also, the versatile use makes it a staple in many diets for the native cultures.

When it is just ripe enough to eat, it is more like bread, more starchy and dry;

when it is very ripe and soft, it is more like fruit, sweeter and with more moisture.

Trees were found growing in New Guinea almost 3500 years ago. They now grow in South East Asia and most Pacific Islands and parts of the Caribbean
