The date of Moses' birth is placed by various scholars and sources at various times
in the period of roughly 1565 - 1525 BCE.
Moses was born in Egypt, and lived there until the age of 40. He then migrated to Midian,
was married and resided there until the age of 80. He then returned to Egypt, where he
was present throughout the tumultuous events leading up to the Exodus, when he led
the Israelites out of Egypt, and continued to lead them through the desert to the promised
land for the next 40 years. He died at the age of 120, having never once in his life set foot
in the Promised Land which his people were then poised to inherit.
Moses was born in Goshen, Egypt (in the Nile-delta area). Traditional chronology puts his birth in 1392 BCE, on the seventh of Adar (early spring).
Other information
Moses was an Israelite, a great-great grandson of Jacob. He was born 245 years after the death of Abraham. The time when Moses was born was when the Pharaoh had ordered his people to kill all Israelite male infants because he (Pharaoh) was afraid that the Israelites would become too strong for him (Exodus ch.1-2).
Moses' mother didn't want him to die. So she made a basket for him and put him in it to float in the Nile reeds. He was found by Pharaoh's daughter, who took pity on him (Exodus ch.2) and raised him as her own son.
Moses was forced to flee after killing a cruel Egyptian taskmaster, and went to Midian, where he wedded the daughter of Jethro.
He eventually achieved the highest level of prophecy (Deuteronomy ch.34) and was called upon by God (Exodus ch.3). He brought the Israelites out of Egyptian slavery (Exodus ch.12). He received the Torah from God (Exodus 24:12) and later recorded it in writing (Deuteronomy 31:24). He went up on Mount Sinai for 40 days and nights (Deuteronomy ch.9-10) and brought down the Two Stone Tablets with the Ten Commandments (Exodus 31:18). He brought the Israelites into the covenant with God (Exodus ch.19 and ch.24), and he oversaw the building of the Tabernacle (Exodus ch.35-40). He was the humblest of men and the greatest of prophets (Numbers ch.12).
According to tradition Moses was born in 1392 BCE, on the 7th of Adar (early spring). He died 120 years later (Deuteronomy ch.34).See also:
The Egyptian historian Manetho records that Moses was born around 1520 B.C. at Heliopolis in Egypt (Merrill Unger, Ungers Bible Dictionary , Moody Press, Chicago, 1988, p. 886). He lived 120 years before God took him and buried him in a secret place. His life is generally spoken of in 3 groups of 40 years: Egypt; Arabia and his governance of Israel (all 12 tribes).
If we use the Scripture to help us obtain a timeframe for the Exodus from Egypt, we will look to the scholarly consensus date of King Solomon's reign mostly agreed to have begun in 970 BC. We are told in 1 Kings 6:1 the following:
1 Kings 6:1New International Version (NIV)Solomon Builds the Temple6 In the four hundred and eightieth year after the Israelites came out of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, the second month, he began to build the temple of the Lord.
So, taking 4 years from the starting date of 970 BC we come to circa 966 BC. Adding 480 years gives us circa 1446 BC as the date of the Exodus. Moses would have died before Joshua enters the Promised Land which would be circa 1400 BC or 120 years from his estimated birth or 3416 years (adding 1 year for year 0 in current calendar).
If Moses was born in 1392 BCE and this is 2015 then he was born 3407 years ago.
