Mainly they were from southern states and were afraid slavery would be outlawed so they went to Texas to live and have slaves. Many of Texans at the time of the Civil War were Confederates. Even Union troops who were Texans and confederate wore the union belt buckle upside down to express their sympathies with the confederate cause.
