The area outside of Rome is a lush valley that grows a lot of fruit and vegetables even today. It reminds me of my home of central CA where we can grow just about anything with the right amount of water. They also imported many things from the various settlements, trading partners, and colonies they had. Trade was very active in the region. Southern Italy also grows olives, lemons, Oranges, and other foods. Seafood was a big food source and eels were also eaten ( eel today is still eaten around Pisa) so they fished off the coast and in the rivers. Meat was another source and they did have herds of sheep and beef as well as hunted.
Food is either grown, reared or imported.
