The Bataan Death March
At the end of MacArthur's painfully bungled defence of the Philippine, he ordered his men to retreat to the Bataan peninsula in the south of Luzon which allowed the Japanese to cut off 75,000 American and Filipino troops. After MacArthur escaped back to stateside, his troops were surrendered to the Japanese.
That is when the atrocity took place. These men were marched 6 days through the jungle deliberately without given water or food. Anyone who dropped out or fainted was basically given a death sentence by beheading, cut throats and bayonet stabbings. Similar treatment was administered for any degree of protest or expression of displeasure.
At the end of the march 18,000 of the prisoners had been killed, that is one in four of the soldiers that started the march. Though this did not mean the end of the ordeal for the American prisoners, many more were to be worked death, starved or executed before the war ended.

The Imperial Japanese committed atrocities and crimes against humanity across Eurasia, the Indian subcontinent and the Pacific region. One of the largest series of crimes included what is now known as the Rape of Nanjing (after the city for which the actions were perpetrated).

Japanese Imperial forces attacked Hong Kong which was defended by local, British, Indian and Canadian forces. The defending forces were heavily outnumbered and generally inexperienced in battle, and quickly overrun by the Japanese who eventually took the colony. During and after the battle the Japanese were guilty of numerous atrocities, including assassinations of captured enemy soldiers and rapes of women in the conquered territories. Please see the link.
Many Filipinos joined the guerrilla movement against the Japanese during World War II in response to the atrocities committed by the Japanese forces, such as torture, mass killings, and forced labor. They also wanted to fight for their country's independence and to support the Allied forces in defeating the Japanese occupation.

The Japanese fought to the end, preferring to kill themselves rather than surrender.
The Nazi Germans had already taken over most of Europe. It was imperative the Allied Forces defeat Hitler and the brutal Nazis before they invaded England and the USA. The atrocities of the Nazis had to be stopped. They would murder at the drop of a hat. The Japanese were a problem but they were not the enemy the Nazis were. In Russia alone they annihilated 20 million Russian (or Soviets if you prefer). Therefore it was decided to split out the effort where nearly 3/4ths of the forces and equipment would go to the European Theater. In the Pacific Theater they did manage to defeat the Japanese with less troops and sailors. At the end of the European war they sent men to the Pacific to prepare for the Japanese mainland invasion. That invasion was prevented when the Emperor of Japan came to his senses after the atomic bombing and surrendered.
