American militiamen were scattered by a British force in the morning, but the British came under fire when they searched for colonial weapons in Concord later in the afternoon, leading to the first armed casualties on both sides. Although the militias bottled up the occupying troops in the Siege of Boston (1775-1776), early battles in New York favored the British.
