The first major international crisis faced by the John F. Kennedy administration was part of the socalled Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba. The CIA helped to train approximately 2500 former Cubans for the purpose of invading the Castro controlled communist Cuba. Because of the size of the invading force, the CIA planned to have the US provide air support for the invasion. The invasion was launched and the 2500 anti-Castro Cubans landed at the Bay of Pigs. The US however did not provide air support for the invasion. The invasion failed as a result of this non support. The entire operation created a crisis internally and externally. Kennedy was blamed by many people for the failure of the operation. He was also criticized for the training of the 2500 soldiers who invaded Cuba. The fact that Cuba was a communist country, and the US had a chance to remove it became a problem. The USSR supported Cuba and a threat according to many as a major security problem existed. The additional fear was that Castro with the tacit support of the USSR would spread his communist revolution to South America. Che Guevara who was a close associate of Castro in fact tried to export the Cuban revolution to South America. He and his supporters however were killed in Bolivia.
