One of the first European groups to set foot in Newfoundland were the vikings from Scandinavia. However, the ancestors of the Newfoundlanders of today came from France, the Netherlands, Ireland and England. Some also came from the Basque Lands of northern Spain and some were Native Americans already living there when the Europeans arrive.
