Zermeno is found in Portugal where it is spelled with a 'C' instead of 'Z'. Of course it also exists in Spain. Although most people believe the 'C' spelling was changed into a 'Z' in America, the name Zermeno (spelled with 'Z') is found in Italy and a variation 'Zermon' is found in Arab countries. The name Zermeno could have originated in any of these countries.

The first records of it reaching the new world are on the ship the Saint Augustine with Captain Sebastian Cermeno, who was the first person to successfully map the California coast in the late 16th century.

Sometime in the late 19th Century a Giorgino Zermeno is recorded to have come through Ellis Island from Italy. It is now a fairly well known name in Mexico, the U.S., and can even be found in Central America and the Philippines. It is rumored to exist as a Chinese surname, although Ithat has not been verified.
