Best Answer

It derives from the word "tomatl", in the Nahuatl language of central Mexico, where tomatoes originate from. It was then changed to tomate in Spanish and finally changed one last time to tomato in English.

--------------------

'xitomatl' is believed to be the Aztec name given to the tomato when tribes in Central America began its systematic cultivation. The modern tomato is probably derived from wild plants from South America, and there are still several varieties of wild tomatoes found in the Andes Mountains in Peru.

The word "Tomato" comes from the Nahuatl word 'tomatl", meaning "the swelling fruit". The tomato originated in South America, and spread around the world following the Spanish colonization of the Americas.

Tomatoes are native to the Americas. The Spanish conquest of Mesoamerica saw the spread of the Aztec tomatl (the word in the Nahuatl languages) throughout parts of Europe and Spanish trading partners. The Spanish adopted the word tomate, which eventually was corrupted in English to tomato.
