'xitomatl' is believed to be the Aztec name given to the tomato when tribes in Central America began its systematic cultivation. The modern tomato is probably derived from wild plants from South America, and there are still several varieties of wild tomatoes found in the Andes Mountains in Peru.

∙ 11y agoTomatoes are native to the Americas. The Spanish conquest of Mesoamerica saw the spread of the Aztec tomatl (the word in the Nahuatl languages) throughout parts of Europe and Spanish trading partners. The Spanish adopted the word tomate, which eventually was corrupted in English to tomato.
