The original Saxophone was created in Brussels, Belgium by Adolf Sax. It was meant to fill in an "empty gap" in the sound that can be found in bands. There are many varieties of saxophone (in order from lowest to highest pitch): Contrabass, bass, baritone, tenor, alto, soprano, sopranino, and spranisimo(there are other names for this one). The alto is currently the most popular type of saxophone. Now, saxophones come from many places: Yanigasawa-Japan, Yamaha-America, Paris, Selmer-America, Paris (Those are the main three brands). The there is Cannonball Saxes-Salt Lake City, Utah, US., Keilwerth- Germany. Giardneli ( I'm not sure on the spelling of that one.), and Jupiter I don't know where they came from. There are also various "made in China" cheapo saxes that don't work very well usually and fall apart.
This is probably to long of an answer but I hope it helps!
The saxophone was developed by Adlophe Sax, a Belgian living in the 19th century. It was designed as a type of hybrid between the woodwind and the brass section, using a brass style body but the single reed mouthpiece was like that of the woodwind. He developed 14 types of saxophone ranging in pitch, from the soprano right down to the contrabass.
