The XYZ Affair took place in France. After the John Jay Treaty, France, an ally to the United States during the American Revolution felt insulted and believed the US had sold out to Britain. To ease things over, John Adams sent representatives to France in 1797 to work out a new agreement with Talleyrand. The French insulted the US representatives by demanding they pay a bribe to even negotiate with them. Upon coming back to the US with the news, there was outrage with many calling for war.
