My grandfather was a sailor on a US destroyer sailing out of Norfolk, Virginia escorting convoys to Europe. He scared me half to death when I was a little kid telling about the time he said something to the ship's cook (Grandpa was a bit of a smartass) and the cook went after him with a meat cleaver. This was the first time in my life I had ever heard of a "straight jacket". His brother was regimental gas officer in a US infantry regiment, which was a National Guard unit from our town. His job was to go up to the front ahead of his unit when they were moving into the trenches and look for gas in shell craters, trench bottoms and other low-lying areas. He was bent over looking at an unexploded gas shell when he stopped a bullet with his hind quarters. Before the stretcher bearers evacuated him he sent a message back to his unit: "No gas. Shot in the ass." They called him "No Gas" Nelson around town the rest of his life.
