My answer is a non-answer - basically Norway Maples are pretty tough tolerant trees but they are an invasive tree, competing with and usually winning over native tree species. There are ever more desirable trees one can plant in Iowa that are large but not extremely tall trees (like the Norway Maple). Norways also seed themselves relentlessly, clogging gutters and creating seedlings and saplings everywhere. Pulling out these saplings is difficult as the roots are particularly tenacious. Consult a nurseryman for a good substitute for Norway Maples. Anyone still selling this invasive tree needs to be educated about the harm it can cause. It's a fairly soft-wood for a hardwood with branches that are fragile and inclined to come down on your house - especially with wet snow as happened to me in New York State with my Norway Maple. My neighbor cut the rest of it down and it made OK firewood with good burnability and average heat. That's the best use for Norway Maple - in a fireplace or woodstove. Another bad trait of the tree is that its roots are notorious sidewalk "heavers", worse than most any other species.
