The term "major religion" is pretty foggy. The ones that spring to mind are Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and Buddhism. Nobody ever argues with the first three, and the remaining two are often left off. The non-religious and atheists almost never get mentioned.

In reality the top two religions are Christianity and Islam followed by Hinduism. The combined non-religious and atheist numbers (19.1%) would bump Islam for the second spot.

So Buddhists at 5.6% are certainly a major religion, beating out Sikhs, Jew and many others.

The number varies by country but even in North America 7% of Americans are Buddhists and 1% of Canadians.

Aside:

Using 1990 world data, religions by percent ofthe world's population:

# Christianity............33.7 # Islam..................19.4 # Nonreligious............15.3 # Hinduism................13.7 # Buddhism.................5.6 # Atheists.................3.8% # Chinese folk religions...3.8 # Ethnic religions.........1.8 # New-Religions............1.8 # Sikhism..................0.3 # Judaism..................0.2 # Baha'i...................0.1 # Confucianism.............0.1 # Jainism..................0.1
