slaves were brought to Brazil because when the portuguese setled on the east coasts of brazil, they discoverd sugar. They then made sugar plantations on the land. They began to import african slaves to work in the sugar plantations

Because the indigenous populations of Brazil that the colonists didn't kill off or decimate with disease were poor slaves (possibly because of contempt) and there weren't nearly enough to compete with the large numbers coming from the African slave trade.
