Historically, the American bison (Bison bison [national mammal of the United States]) roamed from Great Bear Lake in Canada's far northwest, south to the Mexican states of Durango and Nuevo Leon, and east to the Atlantic Seaboard of the United States from New York to Georgia and, rarely, to Florida. As they can jump vertically nearly 6 feet (1.8m), run 35-40 mph (56-64 km/h), and exhibit what is described as a "wild and ungovernable temper", they were never domesticated by Native Americans, or by the European attempts prior to the 20th century. Herds of the American bison have proven to be difficult to confine, as they easily escape or destroy most Fencing systems, including razor wire. They thrive in river valleys and on the plains and prairies. They typically habituate open or semi-open grasslands, scrublands, sagebrush, and lightly wooded areas. The bison herd of Yellowstone Park is frequently found at elevations of 8,000 feet, and the Henry Mountains (Utah)bison herd is found in mountain valleys up to 10,000 feet of elevation.
