The fill / check plug is on the passenger side of the transaxle directly behind the CV axle. It is a 17mm bolt. You will need a special funnel fitted with a long tube to add transaxle fluid. 10w30 motor oil is the correct fluid. Fluid should be added until the fluid level is even with the bottom of the plug hole. (Fill it until it begins to drip out)
The 1997 Honda Civic gearbox has a fluid capacity of 4.8 quarts. You can check the gearbox fluid level with the gearbox dipstick.
Brake Fluid Dot 3 Note: Brake and Clutch fluid are the same
Down the trans dipstick tube.
Checking the fluid level is done from underneath the vehicle. There is a plug located in the side of the transaxle housing unscrew the setscrew and put your ginger in, if you can feel the fluid right at the level or a little comes out then it is at the right level, much below this then add some fluid.
I know on my 97 ford aspire i was told to fill the manual transmission where the speedometer cable goes in on the top of the transaxle. There is one bolt that holds it down and then it just screws off.
You can go to the dealership and they have a specific fluid, or you can use 10w30 engine oil (either is stated in the factory service manuel)
Brake Fluid: fill to line. Coolant: fill to line. Power Steering:fill to line Oil fill:5 to 5.5 qts. Transmission:13.7 qts. Fuel Tank: 20 gallons
Servicing the transaxle on a '97 Corollathere is a differential on the 3 speed auto trans. its in the same casing as the transmission. this combination is called a transaxle. if there is another drain plug on the transaxle besides the one in the black steel pan(its an Allen plug) you can service it. just remove the drain plug and allow it to empty. then slide your hand up the back of the transmission behind where the drain plug is and you'll find the differential fill plug. remove it with a 17mm wrench, fill it with dexron ATF (this is tricky without the right pump)till fluid leaks out the opening, and replace the plug
If the brake fluid level is low you really need to have the brakes inspected for your own safety.
Torque specifications for automatic transaxle: fluid pan bolts 84-96 in-lbs ( 9.4-10.8 Nm )
You will use manual transmission fluid for Honda's in the 1997 Honda Civic LX. Any auto parts store should carry the correct kind.
No, they are not interchangable.
