Answer The first part of your question can be researched. I'm not sure what you mean by the 2nd half. You can't get his Purple Heart unless it has already been issued to him. I don't think the Gov't will send you a new/replacement Purple Heart unless the documents are signed by the Veteran who earned them. I may be wrong. First you must identify the unit that he served with in combat. He may have trained with one unit but what unit was he in while on duty? If you know the unit, then you can find out where that unit served. Also you can contact the National Archives and the records for that unit should have a General Order that issued the Purple Heart. My recommendation is to contact all known family members. Sometimes an distant Aunt will have an ole letter the Vet wrote that will give his unit, etc. It will also provide dates or clues to the dates that he was in the military. Start with that. Then contact the NARA, National Archives, and see if they can help. Custermen
