Becoming a Fashion Buyer is not easy. You are required to have extensive experience in a related field. So for instance, you are dying to become the Buyer of Saks. Well I would recommend first getting a job as a Sales Associate in a Luxury Retailer like Chanel, D&G, Tracy Reese, or Saks itself. Then I would try to work your way up to management. This looks amazing on your resume. As far as schooling, well you get different answers from everyone. I once had a mentor who worked for a High End department store and she told me it didn't mattter where the BA degree came from as long as you had it. And then I have a family freind who graduated NYU and now works for Barney's but feels her job search would have been easier if her degree came from FIT. I would personally try and attend a fashion school. If Fashion is your life and being a BUyer is yoru ULTIMATE career choice then receiveng a BA from FIT or Parsons won't be a bad thing. There are tons of schools iN NYC that are geared towards fashion. Some are: FIT, Parson. Berkeley College (which I attend), some CC's in the CUNY system, I think Kingsboro, in CA you have FIDM (only offers an AA which personally I would just save my money and attend a CC and get the same degree and education for cheaper), San Fran State Univ, IADT in Chicago. The list just goes on and on. Do a Google search. Also I wouldn't waste my time or money with AA's almost EVERY buying position requires a BA. Or if you know someone or have like 10 yrs in the field already it is then not necessary to have a BA. But honestly just get the degree.

A Fashion Buyer is someone who determines what clothing and accessories (most buyers have a specific area that they work in i.e. women's wear buyer, accessories buyer, etc. etc.) will be available in a store for consumers. Buyers will attend fashion and trade shows to possibly make purchases of items they see at such shows or to observe trends and report those trends back to the company. They usually work for department stores or small boutiques. The buyer has a pivitol role in a company's consumer success.

No, the fashion designer Andre Courreges did not go to fashion school. He actually studied to become a civil engineer. He did work with Jeanne LaFaurie and he was apprenticed to Balenciaga in 1950.
New York and California are the best two states to go to, however you can be a fashion designer anywhere.
The fashion buyer makes between 75,000 and 93,000 dollars a year. New York and California buyers make more than other states in the U.S.

I would go to FIDM in New York. That is a great school for fashion and is top ranked.
