In many cases, if the minimum qualifications require either a high school or college degree, the employer may include this in the pre-employment background check which can verify your education. This is done when you sign a consent for a background check when being considered for employment.

Yes, by requiring you to provide a copy of your transcript. (They probably can't get it without your permission, but I'm not certain of that.)

However, they're not particularly likely to do so. Checking up is a hassle, and unless this is your first job right out of school, your work experience is going to be much more important than your high school grades anyway.

If they're looking for people to lay off, that might change things... lying on your application at most places is grounds for immediate dismissal, even if the company doesn't find out about it for years.

An employer can run a background check that they pay someone to do. They can also call your high school directly. Some employers ask for a copy of your diploma.
