Where is the transmission dipstick located on a 1995 Volkswagen Passat?

I had a 2000 jetta and the dipstick is down below by the rack & pinion on the driver's side. It is not long enough to reach the top (accessible from open hood). You have to go under the car and reach on the front drivers side of the transmission.
