The Pope also known as the Bishop of Rome is the leader of the Roman Catholic Church. His residence (the Papal apartments) is located in Vatican City. The Vatican also contains most of the headquarters functions that run the Church.

Vatican City officially the State of the Vatican City is a landlocked sovereign city-state whose territory consists of a walled enclave within the city of Rome, the capital city of Italy. At approximately 44 hectares (110 acres) (0.44 km2), and with a population of barely over 800, it is the smallest country in the world by both population and area.[5][12][13]

Vatican City is a city-state that came into existence in 1929. It is distinct from the Holy See, which dates back to early Christianity and is the main episcopal see of 1.142 billion Roman Catholic and Eastern Catholic adherents from around the globe. Ordinances of Vatican City are published in Italian; official documents of the Holy See are issued mainly in Latin. The two entities even have distinct passports: the Holy See, not being a country, only issues diplomatic and service passports; the state of Vatican City issues normal passports. In both cases the passports issued are very few.

First of all, there is no "Roman Catholic Church" outside the diocese of Rome. The rest of the Church is just know as the Catholic Church. Secondly, the head of the Church is Our Blessed Lord who is everywhere, but resides especially in the Tabernacle in each Catholic Church or chapel.

His representative on earth is the Holy Father, who usually resides in Rome, in Vatican City - which is its own nation-state within Rome.
