No-1 wire goes on the distribitor cap in the 7: o clock position clock wise when standing in front of your vehicle. 18436572
The number 1 cylinder is located at the front left of the engine block while FACING the engine. Follow the spark plug wire to the distributor a POW there it is.
If you will remove the #1 plug, (driver's side front of engine), then turn that cylinder to top dead center, (TDC), on the compression stroke, you can then remove the distributor cap and look at the rotor. The rotor will now be pointing to the #1 plug position. GET THE NUMBER ONE CYLINDER TOP DEAD AND THE ROTOR IN THE DISTRIBUTOR SHOULD BE PIONTING AT IT
You can determine which is number one cylinder by tracing the number one wire back to the cap. The number one plug is the first one in the front on a four cylinder and on a V6 it is the first plug on the drivers side.
The number one plug is the one on the drivers side front of the engine. Therefore the plug wire connected to that plug is number 1 and where it connects to the distributor is the number 1 position on the distributor. If you have removed all the plug wires then you will have to remove the spark plugs, turn the engine over until the number 1 cylinder is at top dead center (TDC) on the compressions stroke. Once it is at TDC then the rotor inside the distributor will be pointing to the number 1 position.
1 is where the rotor is when number 1 cylinder is firing. Then clockwise from 1, 8,4,3,6,5,7,2.
+ goes to starter solenoid, - goes to distributor side post. center plug wire goes to center plug on distributor.
When standing on the passanger side looking at the distributor the top right plug is cylinder one (the cylinder closest to the distributor). The top left plug on the distributor is cylinder two. The bottom left plug is cylinder three. Finally the bottom left plug is cylinder four (the cylinder furthest from the distributor, closest to the timing gear). Hope this helps.
If you look at the distributor of the car, sometimes they are marked with the cylinder number on the cap. Find number 1 and follow the spark plug cable to the spark plug. That will be No. 1 cylinder.
If you have spark at all but one plug, the problem is with that plug, wire, cap or rotor.
If my memory is correct you need a distributor from a Chevy inline 6, a distributor drive gear from an AMC 360 V8, and plug wires from a Ford inline 6
The #1 cylinder should be the first plug clockwise from the electrical connections on an HEI distributor. Or, the first plug clockwise from 3 O'Clock when facing towards the rear of the vehicle.
be it a 4,6,or8 cylinder....be sure you have the crank on TDC, top dead center, install the distributor so that the rotor is pointing to #1 cylinder on the cap
