If it has a servicable filter, it more than likely will be located inside the transmission. The transmission pan will need to be removed to access the filter. Look in your owner's manual.

IT IS LOCATED ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE ENGINE BLOCK STANDING AT THE FRONT OF THE CAR. YOU HAVE TO REACH DOWN AND BACK WITH YOUR HAND AND YOU WILL FEEL IT.(BETWEEN THE ENGINE BLOCK AND THE FIREWALL) If it has a servicable filter, it more than likely will be located inside the transmission. The transmission pan will need to be removed to access the filter. Look in your owner's manual.

The 1987 Nissan Maxima VG30E engine uses hydraulic valve adjusters (also known as "cam followers") which cannot be adjusted. Therefore, there is no specific valve clearance. If you hear valve noise, it could indicate that there's either excessive wear of valve train parts or clogged hydraulic adjusters.
