You should check your owner's manual for the exact location in your 2001 Volkswagen Passat. Then, look for a green?æcap, located on the driver's side in the front of the engine compartment. It should be between the headlight assembly and the ABS brake control.
the green cap is the power steering fluid
Power steering fluid or Automatic transmission fluid

Power steering fluid is beside the windscreen washer resevoir on the front passenger side of the engine bay.
Synthetic power steering fluid from the dealer only. Do NOT mix drugstore power steering fluid, ATF, or non-synthetic fluid in your steering system. Damage to the seals/gaskets could result in leaks.

Its between the battery and the windshield washer fluid container .
You can use any mineral based power steering fluid, but i would recomend that you use Vw brand specific P/S fluid. .

It seems VW use their own formulation of steering fluid. it's "VW G 002 000". Seems like you have to get it from a VW dealer.
