You did not say what you were working on and that would help.
Now I do know that it has to go to a direct vacuum source like the base of a carburetor or the intake manifold vacuum port.
you need manifold vacuum for the brake booster.. (intake manifold)
From the booster, to a vacuum source on the engine.
It could be a leaking vacuum hose to the power brake booster or the membrane in the booster could have a hole. When the brakes are applied, the booster is opened to the engine vacuum via the hose. The vacuum leak would then increase, causing the engine to stall.
Did you check the Power Brake booster vacuum hose? Also the booster itself make have a busted diaphragm.
Usually a vacuum leak, check your power brake booster hose first, then any other vacuum line for cracks, breaks, or disconnection.
On the Cummins diesel it is between the power steering pump and the engine timing cover. Follow the large hose from the brake booster towards the front. The gas engines do not have a vacuum pump.On the Cummins diesel it is between the power steering pump and the engine timing cover. Any place there is a vacuum hose, under the hood and under the dash. Also the Power Brake Booster hose. The Booster diaphragm may also be busted. An Intake Manifold Gasket or the Intake Plenum gasket are sources of a vacuum leak.
The power booster check valve would be located where the vacuum hose is connected to the booster. The vacuum hose is connected to the valve and the valve is inserted into the booster. They are usually made of plastic.
If you have power brakes look where the large hose that goes to the brake booster connects to the engine and that is your main vacuum source.
insufficient vacuum. The vacuum is part of the brake booster. First thing to check is a defective or leaking hose in the brake vacuum system.
You left out the main ingredient. There is vacuum hoses for the PCV valve, the power brake booster, air conditioner and emissions. They are all on the engine under the hood.
Sounds like a severe vacuum leak. Can also be the power brake booster diaphragm is busted. Check all vacuum hose connections and look for a crack in a hose. Also check the booster to see if it will hold vacuum.
