In Roman religion, Vulcan is the god of beneficial and hindering fire. Vulcan's oldest shrine in Rome, called the "Volcanal", was situated in the Forum Romanum. Thus the word Volcano comes from Vulcan because volcanoes in Italy are associated with fire.

The origin of the name of Mt. Vesuvius is less clear but some scholars ascribe it to a transliteration (in Latin) of Son of Hercules (Huēsou huios).
