The same day as Pearl Harbor the Japanese attacked the Philippine Islands. These were a US possession at the time. The Japanese went on to conquer the Philippines.

In late December 1941 the Japanese captured US held Wake Island. They had been repulsed once, came back, and were successful on the second try.

In June 1942 the Japanese tried to take Midway Island, but were turned back in an epic sea battle, which was really the turning point of the Pacific War. As a diversion for the Midway operation the Japanese captured two islands in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, Attu and Kiska.

At least one Japanese submarine surfaced off the coast of California and used its deck gun to fire a few shells at an oil refinery.

Late in the war the Japanese launched "balloon bombs". These were small balloons, like a child's toy, filled with gas and with a small bomb hanging below. The prevailing wind currents over the Pacific blow from Japan toward the US, and the Japanese hoped these would arrive in the northwest US and start forest fires. A few actually did make it to the US, but the only damage done was an entire family killed while on a picnic in Oregon that found one of them.
