Anteaters, which there are currently four species of, are native to Mexico and Central America (which is composed of Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua Costa Rica and Panama) and, except for the northern tamandua species of anteaters, the continent of South America (Brazil, etc) as far south as Uruguay.
The four species of anteaters are northern tamandua, southern tamandua, silky anteater and the giant anteater.
However Australia does have a species of ant eating animal called Echidna, which are sometimes called "Spiny Anteaters".
Australia also has another ant-eating animal called the Numbat, which was previously called a banded anteater. The numbat is also endangered.
However they are not true "anteaters", they just eat ants as part of their diet like many other animals. True anteaters belong to a mammal subfamily called Vermilingua. Meanwhile the echidna is an egg-laying mammal of the Tachyglossidae family and the numbat is a marsupial of the Myrmecobiidae family.
The closest relations to anteaters are armadillos.
