It is not the Crankshaft Positioning Sensor, Idle adjustment sensor, Battery, wiring, ignition modules or plugs.
On a 1986 GMC Vandura 3500 with a 350 engine, the crankshaft position sensor is typically located near the bottom front of the engine, close to the crankshaft itself. However, it's important to note that models from this era may not have a crankshaft position sensor, as they often relied on mechanical systems for ignition timing. If your specific model does have one, check near the harmonic balancer or flywheel area for the sensor. Always consult the vehicle's service manual for precise location and specifications.
I was told it is on the top to the bell housing
Using a scanner with a scope, you can view the output wave of the sensor as you crank the engine.
It does not have one. Crankshaft position sensors are used in distributorless ignition systems to tell the ignition control module where the crankshaft is in its rotation. The 1982 thru 1986 2.8L engines had distributors so they had no need of a crankshaft position sensor.

On a 1986 Chevrolet 350 engine, the crankshaft position sensor is typically located near the bottom of the engine, often mounted on the timing cover or near the crankshaft. For some models, it may be positioned near the flywheel or harmonic balancer. Always refer to a specific service manual for detailed diagrams and exact locations, as placements can vary slightly based on the vehicle's configuration.

V6 crank position sensorThe crank position sensor is part of the distributor on a V6 All Fieros equipped with a distributor (1984 - 1986 4-cyl and 1985 to 1988 V6) have the crank sensor inside the distributor. It may also be known as a distributor pickup or HEI pickup.Fieros with DIS (1987 to 1988 4 cylinder) have a crank sensor on the back side (engine side) of the ignition module extending into the engine block. The ignition module is the flat base that the ignition coils are attached to.
