With out knowing which engine you are speaking about, it's difficult to answer the question directly.
Most oil filters on all domestic vehicle engines are low enough to be about the height of the top of the oil pan.
GM has been putting their filters facing the front of the vehicle, so it may be about the middle of the engine from front to back, and you can only get at from under the vehicle, and it probably tucked up in amounst hoses, lines or other equipment where you have to place yourself in probably only one place where you can even see it.
