Petroleum is found in the form of a thick natural mixture of gaseous, liquid, and solid hydrocarbons obtained from beneath the surface of the earth.

The main producing countries are Russia, the USA, Canada and the 12 members of OPEC - Algeria, Angola, Ecuador, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela. All of these, except for Canada, are countries with sources of liquified petroleum (Crude Oil).

Canada has the second largest proven reserve of oil, second only to Saudi Arabia. It is contained in sand deposits sometimes known as the Tar Sands. They are located principally in the Province of Alberta. It is expensive to refine as a result, and uses about 80% of the energy eventually yielded following refining, plus a tremendous amount of freshwater just to refine it (in other words, it takes 8 units of energy to yield 10 units of energy once refined. Thus its efficiency factor is only 20%. Therefore, it is the most polluting form of refining of petroleum known).
