Good question ! I havent been able to find ANY manuals for the 2002 Mazda Protege' ANYWHERE. Whats up with that!?!? There are tons of Proteges on the road and no manuals on how to fix them? Anyone wanna be a millionaire? Print them shop manuals and sell em online.
Hello Chiltons and Haynes ! Wake up! And make us Protege owners some MANUALS
Anyway, to answer your question. I spent most of the afternoon chasing these two sensor down and then replacing them so i hope my description helps you save some time.
There are two oxygen sensors. One is located on the front area of the engine on the manifold ( near the radiator) It has (aprox. 4 depending on the year) small wires(black, blue, white, gray) running to it from a wiring harness. The sensor almost looks like a little spark plug sticking out of the manifold cover.
The second sensor is located below the first sensor almost on the bottom of the engine. It is attached to the exhaust system below the manifold. Same wiring is running to it and it looks almost identical to the first sensor.
The sensors are for measuring the amount of oxygen before and after the catalytic converter. This is to measure the fuel efficiency of the engine.
Good luck.
Hey, This is Josh, just letting you know, with the 4 cyl engines on those protege's there is only bank 1 so you only have to worry about bank 1. Sensor 1 is located ON the manifold, between the engine block and the fan. Sensor 2 is located under the engine block, bellow the manifold. Just jack the front end up, and crawl up underneath the car and you should see it.
There is two oxygen sensors. One is located before the catalytic converter is located under the heat sheld. The oxygen sensor after the catalytic converter is found under the catalytic converter (under the car) before the catalytic transfer pipe.
