It is quite simple to replace the four-way flasher relay switch in your 1986 Chevrolet Astro Van. The four-way flasher relay switch simply plugs in and out.

The signal/four way flasher relay is mounted beside the fuse panel. The four way flasher is incorporated in the signal/wiper switch. Dust can accumulate in the four way flasher switch and then stop working, use a contact cleaner spray and the switch start working again.
To replace the flasher relay on a 1998 Nissan Pathfinder 4WD, unplug the old turn signal flasher and plug in the new one. It is a three prong plug located under the dash on the driver's side. The hazard flasher relay works the same way.
Defective Flasher Relay
There is a flasher fuse and a flasher relay. These are two different items. You can pull a flasher fuse out and inspect it. When it's blown you can see it that it is blown. That vehicle has two flasher relays. One is for the directional signals and the other is for the emergency 4-way flashers. They both use the same part number relay. Simply switch the two flasher relays to determine which one is bad.
The relay flasher ( if this is the one for your turn signals )is inside the steering column. At the bottom of/or part way down the steering column there should be two screws.Remove them and your relay should be inside. The flasher should be a 12 Volt 2 terminal #LF 12
Check the fuse, and the Turn Signal Flasher Relay. The hazzard lights have a separate relay.
Didn't say what year but, most of them had the signal flasher relay and 4-way flasher relay behind the lower plastic dash panel, aprox below the radio. The panel must be removed to gain access to the relays.
The flasher relay is located above the fuse box/fuse panel on the left side of the driver's foot-well. To access it, you will need to lower the black plastic panel above the brake and accelerator pedals. You no not need to remove any screws, the panel is held-on by 3 clips at the front (side closest to driver's seat). The relay itself can be found on the top-right corner. It is typically a black box. To be sure, turn on your 4-way flasher (assuming that this works) and follow the clicking sound. From my understanding, the flasher relay is a dual-relay, acting as the relay for both the 4-way hazards and the turn-signals.
Turn Signal flasher is located in the fuse box on the left side of the dash. There should be two round flasher units. The top one is the four way flasher and below is the turn signal flasher.
The signal flasher relay may be on its way out.
