  • Automobile manufacturers use the following naming convention when referring to Oxygen Sensors.

Bank 1 = The bank (or side) that contains cylinder number 1.

Bank 2 = The bank (or side) that does NOT contain cylinder number 1.

Sensor 1 = The sensor that is located before the catalytic converter.

Sensor 2 = The sensor that is located either directly in the catalytic converter or after it.

In the case of a 2005 Ford Taurus with a V6, Bank 1 would be the forward most bank, the one towards the front of the car by the radiator and Bank 2 would be the one towards the rear of the engine compartment back by the firewall.

A word of caution, usually, but not always, a trouble code indicating a lean condition for an Oxygen sensor is almost caused by something other than the sensor. Usually a vacuum leak, fuel delivery problem etc.The sensor If you open your hood look down on your header pipes it has 2 wires on it located on 1 of your header pipes ,it has 2 wires and is very hot and scews into that pipe it looks like a spark plug that is your down draft O2 Sensors your UPDRAFT SENSOR IS AFTER YOUR CAT CONVERTER the sensor determines how much o2 or carbone is run through your engine ,so it will tell your engine to run rich or lean, people don't realize that this sensor is the first thing the computer reads but to be read it has to become 635 degrees before all of your other sensors work.
