USSR The USSR doesn't exist anymore. It stood for the United Soviet Socialist Republic AKA the Soviet Union before it was dissolved 26 December 1991. Most of what was once the USSR remains as the the Russian Federation (Russia) but there are many parts of what was once the USSR that are now independent countries including Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Ukraine, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan.
The USSR stretched from the eastern borders of Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Romania, north to the Arctic Ocean, east to the Pacific Ocean, and south to the northern borders of China, Mongolia, Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkey. It included much of eastern Europe and northern Asia - being the only country besides Turkey to lie on two different continents.
The letters USSR stand for Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which was the full name of the Soviet Union. It consisted of Russia and fourteen other republics. It disintegrated in the 1990s.
The Soviet Union used to occupy most of Eurasia, that is, Eastern Europe, North and Central Asia. Russia took up most of the Soviet Union, so if you look at the map of today's Russia and mentally add a padding of other Soviet Republics around its perimeter to the West and South, you will get an idea of what the Soviet Union looked like.
As of 1991, the Soviet Union does not exist.
the USSR, sometimes known as the Soviet Union, no longer exist but it used to be, all of Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, the Ukraine, Moldova, Lithuania, Armenia, Estonia, Latvia, Turkmenistan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, and Belarus other countries were unofficially Soviet controlled but remained legally and politically independent while others were governments in exile that were still recognized by the western powers until their lands could be restored.
The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics or USSR for short was built up of several different countries mainly Russia.
When the USSR collapsed these controlled territories were given their indepenance:
Russia , Belarus , Ukraine , Moldova , Georgia , Armenia , Azerbaijan , Kazakhstan , Uzbekistan , Turkmenistan , Kyrgyzstan , Tajikistan , Estonia , Latvia and Lithuania
