actually there is not one "unit." The AC system is made up of several componets that are spread out into different places on the car. The AC compressor is the heart of the system, and is located down low on the RF corner of the engine compartment, and is driven by the belt. The AC condenser is located in front of the radiator, is cooled by the radiator fan, and looks similar to the radiator. The Evapoartor core is located inside the AC/heater box, which is located inside of the passenger's copmartment, behind the dash on the passenger's side. The accumulator/drier is located in the engine compartment, on the firewall toward the passenger' side, ad all of this is tied together by hoses and lines that run in between these componets.
Could be the servo unit in the transmission. Had the same problem and replaced the fuel pump in our 1999 ford contour but it was the servo unit.

The gauge itself is in the instrument cluster; it is the sending unit that is in the tank. Between the two is wiring and a fuse which should be checked before condemning the gauge or sending unit. jb
