An obdII code reader will tell you why the light is on and might tell you what is wrong
Chances are it is an oxygen sesor. An OBII code reader should tell you if it is the front or rear sensor. I replcaed the front O2 sensor on my Explorer last fall. Easy job too!!!

You will find it mounted to bottom of dash pannel above center hump in floor, well that's the connection for the code reader. the actual reader is something you have to use to retrieve the error codes.
