on the 1985-1999 models once the riders section of the seat is removed
remove the two screws holding the coil mounting plate down unplug the coils from the wiring harness unscrew the two H T leads and remove the plate and the two coils out the way there you have access to the battery the only way it comes out is up the way between the frame rails and the tank and carefully easing it out by the fuel filter line and battery leads once that's done just do the same in reverse to reassemble if everything is clear the battery should drop in no problem.Once you have done it a couple of times its a breeze
