On a 1998, it's on the blower motor itself. Good bet it's the same on the 1996. Open the glovebox, push the tabs on the sides so you can open it further. You can see the blower motor. The resistor is the thing the wires attach to. Unplug the connector, and the resistor comes right out with (I believe) just one screw.

On the passenger side, bend under the dach, disconnect the coupler, remove the screw of the small hexgonal part and remove the blower motor resistor!
