the easiest thing to do is to use an OBD II scan tool to access the computer. The scan tool can also be used to clear the DTC after repair. If you want to do it the long way... The ECM is located between the driver and passager seats behind the center console on the floor. The back of the computer is towards the firewall. Acessing the codes requires access to the back of the computer. From the passager side, turn the computer 90 degrees to expose the back (DO NOT REMOVE THE WIRE HARNESS ON THE FRONT OF THE ECM). On the back of the ECM you will see a mode selector knob (covered by a piece of tape). Turn the key to the ON position (DO NOT START ENGINE). Turn the mode selector knob fully clockwise, wait 2 seconds, then turn the knob fully counterclockwise (NOTE: the knob starts off in the fully counterclockwise position). the check engine light will start flashing the code. the first set of slow flashes is the first number, the second set of fast flashes is the second number. make sure to write it down as multiple codes may flash. remember, the code always starts with slow flashes. don't worry if you miss the codes they will repeat. after you get the codes, search online for ECM code descriptions, they will tell you whats wrong. '96 codes are four digits, so if the MIL flashes 5 long and 5 short, when looking it up you look for 0505. Also search online for B14 FSM. its the full service manual from Nissan. in there they have same procedure as described above, some troubleshooting tips and also how to clear the DTC. Once you fix the problem(s), the ECM should clear by itself and the check engine light will shut off. ...good luck, its a pain to do it this way.
