According to the 1999 Ford Escort Owner Guide it came from the factory with Ford Premium Engine Coolant ( mixed 50 / 50 with distilled water , green in color , meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A )
The temperature sensor (sends coolant temp to the PCM) is located in the top of the thermostat housing. The temperature sender (sends coolant temp to the gauge) is located in the bottom front of the same housing.
The Ford Escorts temperature sensor is mounted in the following locations. In the 1.8L engines it is located in the cylinder head, 1.9L engines it is threaded in the heater hose inlet pipe, and in 2.0L engines, it is located at the rear of the engine.
Remove the radiator cap and fill with coolant until full, (Engine Cold). Start the engine and let it run to help remove any trapped air. Refill as necessary. Fill the coolant recovery tank to the full mark after the engine cool down.
