Hi, My name is Glenn and I show up as anonymous because I did not take the time to sign in. I had access to a 1999 Jeep Wrangler service manual and from what I saw, the crankshaft sensor for the 4.0 liter six cylinder engine is located on the bell housing on the driver's side. It is held in place by a bracket secured by one of bell housing mounti9ng bolts (manual transmission) or two smaller bolts for the manual transmission. It is a hall effect sensor and reads special notches on the flywheel, three sets of four notches to generate the pulses to fire the coil. I would post copies of the pictures from the manual but it would probably be a copyright violation. Also, I am pretty sure that the crankshaft sensor locations are the same for the 4.0 six in the Cherokee. Glenn
On the 4.0L engine, it is on the drivers side bell housing, about the 11:00 position if you are underneath looking forward from behind the drivers side wheel.
Its should be neer the top of the bellhousing on the drivers side of the engine. It reads off of the flywheel..

The crank sensor should be on the drivers side of the transmission bell housing. It's more towards the top of the bell housing. The easiest way to get to it is reaching down from the top of the engine just below the valve cover. Atleast that is where it is on my 91 4.0L
On my 97 jeep grand Cherokee, with the 5.2 liter v8, its located in the distributor, under cap & rotor.
If you take out the battery tray and turn it over, you will find the Battery Temperature Sensor. Just found out this was the reason my check engine light stayed on. One of the wires was exposed and discharging to the frame of the jeep.
From Owners manual for my 1997 Jeep Cherokee 4 liter 6 cylinder engine, it shows 6 us quarts
