Only automatic transmissions have a dipstick. Manual transmissions have a plug in the side that must be unscrewed to check the fluid/gearlube level. Note, also, that 4X4 vehicles also have a transfer case bolted to the back of the transmission which has it's own level hole that must be checked as well.
The fluid/gearlube should only be up to the bottom edge of the hole (make sure the vehicle is on a level surface. The theory is, if you pump in the fluid/gearlube until it runs back out, then wait till it stops running out, the level will be perfect and you can put the plug(s) back in.

Transmission fluid is filled by pouring the fluid directly into the dipstick tube. Be careful to put fluid in the correct dipstick. The transmission dipstick is located on the passenger's side, closest to the firewall (the cab). Remove the dipstick, use a funnel and fill.
