On the Escort the ecm is called the pcm (power control module). It is located in the console inside the car just below the heater controls.
The ECU is located inside the passenger compartment under the console where it fits up against the dash.
It is inside the passenger compartment inside the center console where it meets the dash.
It is inside the passenger compartment at the end of the console where it meets the dash. You have to take the console out to get to it.
The 2002 Ford Escort ZX2 does have an ECU. There should be no need to alter this part, as this is the main computer unit for the vehicle.

The ECU, on your 1998 Toyota Corolla, is located on the firewall in the engine compartment. The unit is on the drivers side of the engine compartment. Firewall.
The ECU is located below the cowl cover on the right side of the firewall.

In the 1998 Ford Escort ZX2 Sport, it is a component within the Constant Control Relay Module (CCRM), which is located under the air filter. Also check the high and low pressure switches in the system. Be careful, as the 1998 and 1999A models used a sensor, rather than a pressure switch for at least one of the units. Shorting the sensor (the typical test for a switch) is bad news, and can cause damage to CCRM or ECU. (I found out the hard way, after taking the car to the local Firestone shop, which refused to cover damage that I could not prove. $600 for replaced ECU at dealer.)
