If your 328 is automatic it will be located behind (not in front) of the radiator, it is the metal finned thing in the center of the fan. if your car is manual, you don't have one. to remove it you must disconnect it from the water pump pully. use a thin wrench to turn the bolt and lodge a screw driver through the screws on the pully to prevent it from moving otherwise it will keep turning. the fan clutch bolt is reverse threaded, which means you must turn the wrench "clockwise". after the fan/fanclutch assembly is removed just a unscrew the the fan clutch from the finns. there are tools that can make this process easier but i had no problem with the wrench and screwdriver. try searching for "e46 fan clutch tool" on Yahoo or Google.
You will need to remove the transmission. Remove the clutch plate retaining bolts. Remove the clutch linkage. Remove the clutch retaining bolts.
The hydraulic clutch slave cylinder is located on the mainshaft of the trans. You must remove the trans to get to it
Remove the transmission. Remove the clutch plate and springs. Remove the clutch. Reverse the process to install the new clutch.
the slave clutch cylinder is located inside the housing of the clutch/transmission. Unless you really know what you are doing a trained tech probably should replace this part.
It's in between engine and transmission. If you want to see it, you will have remove the transmission.
Remove the exaust pipes. Remove the transmission. It is located inside the bell housing section of the transmission.
Remove the fan itself then remove the clutch from the fan
You will a lot of special tools as well.. Remove the A/C compressor Remove the A/C clutch disc and hub retaining bolt. Remove the bolt. Remove the A/C clutch disc and hub spacers. Remove the pulley snap ring. Remove the A/C clutch pulley. Remove the A/C clutch field coil.
Remove the lower ( part of the fairing ) on the left side, ( clutch side ) its in there.
If you need to replace the slave cylinder it is located in the bell housing and the trans has to be removed. The clutch master cylinder is located on the firewall on the drivers side
Remove the clutch cover , you might have to remove the left floorboard to remove the cover . The rear clutch can easily be removed by removing the bolt in the middle and pulling it straight outward . The front clutch requires a puller that screws into the center of the clutch .Removal without a puller will result in clutch damage .
