Hi, If you have an engine with a carb, yhen your job is pretty simple since the pump is on the cylinder head. The pump is mounted with two bolts. Before you remove the pump, you need to disconnect the neg batt cable, next, remove the gas cap, next remove the hoses from the pump and drain the excess fuel from the hoses. When you remove the pump and remove the pump actuating rod you need to clean the pump gasket completely from the cylinder head. When you replace the pump, just reverse the steps you took except for draining the hoses, mak sure you coat the fuel pump actuatin rod with new oil as it rides on the cam, , now you need to ccharge the hoses with fuel. You need to have someone turn the engine over, with the neg batt cable still disconnected, until gas comes from the hose, then reconnect the hoses. If your car is fuel injected the situation is different. In a fuel injected car, whether the car is Throtle body Fuel Injection or Multipoint Fuel Injection, the fuel pump is in the gas tank. To change that is another ball game. As before you disconnect the battery. You're going to need to raise the car in order to do finish the job too. If taking the gas tank and disconnecting everything is above your level or something you just don't have the facilities to do it in, then I'd have it done. The gas level float is another place our cars are subject to a failure. the two wires that are on the sender are exposed to all the elements and can break easily. If you have the pump repaired or do it, you should do what I did which is put some RTV that is going to stand up to everything and surround the wires and the connections so they won't break because if they do, then you have to lower the gas tank again, kill two birds with one stone. Good luck and I hope this is timely for you and helps. Steve H.

Hi, Your fuel pump is located inside the gas tank. Steve H.
right behind the glove box
The fuel pump relay on a 96 Geo Tracker is located in the main fuse box. It is positioned along the right side of the engine compartment, inside a water tight enclosure.
